Watering Schedule and Rules - Pinellas County (2024)

FAQs

How long should each sprinkler zone run in Florida? ›

Pop-up sprinkler heads should run about 30 - 40 minutes. Rotating sprinklers should run for about an hour to an hour and a half. Of course all this depends on coverage. Just because an area is getting wet does not mean it is receiving enough water.

What is a normal watering schedule? ›

Most lawns need to be watered no more than three days a week in the spring as well as in the summer and two days a week in the fall.

When can I run my sprinklers in Florida? ›

In short, the YRR prohibits landscape irrigation between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and limits watering to two or three days per week depending on the area.

Can I water my garden at 5pm? ›

The best time to water plants is in the morning or evening.

Morning watering is actually preferable to evening watering as the plant has time to dry before the sun goes down. At night, water tends to rest in the soil, around the roots, and on the foliage, which encourages rot, fungal growth, and insects.

How many days should you water your lawn in Florida? ›

The SJRWMDsays, “Healthy Florida lawns require no more than two days per week of water during the hot, dry season — less during rainy periods — and no more than one day a week during cooler weather.”

How long should I run my sprinklers? ›

Sprinklers should be set to run for about 30 to 35 minutes at a time twice a week. Your goal is at least 1″ of water a week for your lawn. When it's hot and dry, double the water times while still trying to water just 2 or 3 days a week.

Should I water my lawn 2 or 3 times a week? ›

Watering every day is not advised. It should be done 2 to 3 times per week only to prevent a shallow root system. If possible, water during the early morning hours to ensure that the lawn dries entirely before nightfall. However, watering at any time of the day is better than not watering at all.

How long should sprinklers run in each zone? ›

Water Thoroughly: Rotor zones should run for about 30-40 minutes per zone and spray zones 10-15 minutes per zone.

How long to run sprinkler for 1 inch of water? ›

On average, it will take 30 minutes to get a half inch of water. So, 20 minutes, three times per week will give a lawn about an inch of water. This formula works best with healthy, well-cultivated soil.

Can I water lawn before sunrise? ›

The ideal time to water your lawn is about an hour before sunrise. This gives water an ample amount of time to soak into the ground, but leaves blades of grass damp for a shorter amount of time than watering at night which prevents fungus from growing.

How long should I be watering my lawn? ›

How should the irrigation be scheduled? Water once a week for 42 minutes. Water twice a week for 21 minutes each day. Water 3 times a week for 14 minutes each day.

At what time watering is not advisable? ›

Watering the plants in the (late) afternoon:

Watering in the middle of the day is definitely not a good idea, especially when the sky is clear and the sun is right at its peak in the afternoon. Watering in hot hours will have an adverse effect on the growth of plants.

Can I water plants at 7pm? ›

Watering at night is not the best for your plants' leaves or overall health. Here's why. After a night time soak, leaves can stay wet for a pretty long time since they don't have the day's sun to dry them off. Because of this, damp leaves become extra vulnerable to fungal development.

Should you water plants twice a day in hot weather? ›

As the weather heats up and plants reach full size, you may need to water containers (and especially hanging baskets) twice a day. When you water containers (or plants in the ground), check that the soil is actually dry before you water.

What days can I water my lawn in Pinellas County? ›

Potable Watering Schedule
ADDRESSES ENDING IN:PINELLAS COUNTY WATERING DAYS

Odd Number (1, 3, 5, 7, 9)Wednesday and Saturday

What days can I water in St Pete? ›

Watering of established lawns and landscapes is permitted from 5 to 9 a.m. and/or from 7 to 11 p.m. Addresses ending in an EVEN number may irrigate on Tuesday and Saturday only, if necessary. Addresses ending in an ODD number and locations with no address may irrigate on Wednesday and Sunday only, if necessary.

Can I water my garden now? ›

The most suitable time for watering is morning, which reduces evaporation, but late afternoon is okay as well — provided you keep the foliage from getting wet, which can lead to fungal issues.

What month do you stop watering? ›

You should not completely stop watering your lawn in the fall until the ground freezes. After the ground freezes, it would be pointless to water grass because the frozen ground would act as a barrier, blocking the water's path to the roots.
