The rarest Ferrari ever made is for sale and it can be yours for a cool $1.85m (2024)

Have you heard of the Ferrari 458-based Pininfarina Sergio? Probably not, as only six were made. What about the iconic 250 GTO? There were 36 of those. Even the Ferrari F40 is positively common with a fleet of 1,311 being built.

However, this 1984 Ferrari 328 Convertible (serial number 49543) is the rarest of them all, being the only one in existence. And it is for sale.

Painted Giallo Modena (yellow) over a black leather interior with a black soft top, the car has travelled just 14,000km and still resides in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, near its home town of Maranello near Modena.

The ask, a rather healthy €1,200,000 (A$1.85m), which is about €1.1m (A$1.7m) more than a regular Ferrari 328. So why the crazy price?

Well, Ferrari never made a 328 convertible, at least, not officially.

Featuring a 200kW 3.2-litre V8 and a five speed manual transmission, the 328 was the evolution of the Ferrari 308, which was offered only in a coupe (GTB) or targa (GTS) form.

Produced between 1984 and 1988, the 328 was built alongside the 2+2 Mondial, V12 Testarossa, grand-touring 412 and crossed over production of the 288 GTO and F40 supercars.

According to record, chassis 49543 was not only the prototype convertible, it was also the first development prototype for the 328 series.

The car was designed by Pininfarina and built as a production-ready soft-top at Ferrari’s Carrozzeria Scaglietti production facility in Modena. It was then certified, and road registered to test the performance of the new 3.2-litre V8, and dynamic prowess of the refined chassis.

However, Ferrari was already producing a mid-engine V8 convertible by way of the Mondial, and management felt that the 328 would compromise sales of the 2+2 (a total of 2456 were produced between 1983 and 1993, to 3693 Mondial coupes), and so the 328 kept the same GTS and GTB options of the 308.

Unlike many ‘not for production’ prototypes, which tend to be destroyed, the yellow cabrio was sold to a private buyer and left to run free.

A total of 7,412 Ferrari 328 were produced during its four-year run, and 82 per cent of them were the GTS Targa variant. It was one of the last cars overseen by Enzo Ferrari before his death in 1988.

Would the convertible have been successful? Probably, but only one lucky buyer will ever know for sure.
