Hi Wishful. Sorry to throw in confusion now that you get it ;-) but I just wanted to clarify because I may have been a bit hasty with the response -
When the aforementioned speaker asked "Did you get it/Do you get it" then he was referring to something that he has just said. In this context, both answers make sense.

Perhaps a better explanation would have been -
"Got it" = I

understood

the information (and if the information was only given a second ago then it is obvious that it is still understood. However, if it was given a long time ago then it may need to be clarified whether they still get it)
"Get it" = I still understand the information.

Both can be used in the majority of sentences, but one

can't

say certain things like "I get it, but now I can't remember how to do it".
