Charles LambJul 18, 2016 21:31:16 GMT Quote Post by bekahredinger on Jul 18, 2016 21:31:16 GMTThis quote by Charles Lamb is very important to the book, as one of the main themes of the book is about children's innocence. We can see stark differences between children and lawyers in the book, particularly in part two. The lawyer defending Mayella Ewell, Mr. Gilmer, is arguably an antagonist of the story because of all the work that he put into his case. Dill says that "It was just him I couldn't stand...that old Mr. Gilmer doin' him thataway, talking so hateful to him" (265). The horrible things that Mr. Gilmer said to Tom Robinson actually made Dill feel sick, which is one of the main times that we see Scout and Dill's innocence contrasted to the lawyer's prejudice. |

Sanchay, Kanchan, Pyarali & Rutwik Post by isaacthompson on Jul 23, 2016 13:47:44 GMTThis quote means that everyone, including lawyers, were children once. Mr. Gilmer was a child once, and he was probably a carefree go lucky kid like Scout, but he made choices along the way that put him on the side of racism. Even Bob Ewell, a suspected abuser, was a child. Even Bob Ewell was loved once by a wife and got married, but he made choices as well that made him decide to do things he shouldn't do. Charles Lamb's quote shows of the theme of degradation of childhood innocence in this book, and is a very fitting quote for the epigraph. |

Charles LambJul 29, 2016 4:56:44 GMT Quote Post by ryleabaumberger on Jul 29, 2016 4:56:44 GMTI agree with you Isa, that as a kid you should be innocent and carefree, instead of having to worry about cases like this one. This was a very important quote because it not only showed that you should not judge lawyers, or anybody, but that you also can keep strong morals and rights even when being a lawyer, or cop for instance. To answer your question, Atticus was defending a black man, not only so that he could make money to support his family, but also because he truly believed that blacks are not bad people, and that they deserve a fair trial and treatment over all. Even to this day, people are judging cops, lawyers, blacks, etc. and discriminating against them because they do not feel that they go about their job or life the right way even when they do not know them. Judging people by there looks is something that was very prominent back then, and still is to this day. Even though the town was against Atticus, he knew that he had to do the right thing for Tom Robinson and defend him no matter how others perceived his actions, and in my opinion we need more people like that today. So even if you are in a law enforcing position in society, that does not mean by any circumstances that the person or little kid inside of you dies, because that person will always be inside of them no matter how evident it is to others. |
