Introduction to the Short Story Unit

A short story is a short work of fiction. Fiction, as you know, is prose writing about imagined events and characters. There are five key elements that go into every great short story: character, setting, conflict, plot and theme. In this unit you will use a set of graphic organizers in order to demonstrate your comprehension of the story. At the end of this unit you will create your own short story complete with pictures using a story maker app. of your choice.
Please choose a short story to begin the unit.

  4. To apply expository writing ( Filling out an outline)
  5. To develop fluency: Students will selecttext to tape their perfect “reading with expression.” passage.
  6. To learn about how authors use characterization (direct and indirect)

_____Step 2: Please read the short story "Stray". Follow along with the audio as you read the text.
_____Step 3: Please review a "Plot Diagram" video before the activity. Find it in the Plot introduction tab.
_____Step 4: After reading your story, please plot the story onto a blank plot diagram. Place this sheet in activities.
_____Step 5: Novel Check: Please download character faces activity into your activity folder to complete. Use your novel to describe three characters in your required reading novel.
_____Step 6: Please web the "Short Story Elements" presentation. Every slide gets a word bubble. (Whole Class Activity) Go to Edmodo to answer the blog question: Tell one thing you know about the elements of the short story.
_____Step 7: Review how to web a presentation.
_____Step 8: Please web the "Characterization" Presentation. Every slide gets a word bubble. Every bubble gets one or two words. Then write a good sentence containing words from one of the bubbles.
_____Step 9; Please review "How to fill out an outline" presentation.
_____Step 10: Please create and complete an outline in Rough Drafts to respond to this expository: Taking care of a pet _____ is hard work.
_____Step 11: Please complete the characterization activity for Grandpa Jeremiah after reading the story on pg. 38.
_____Step 12: Watch the Characterization video of "Frozen". How did the author use characterization in the movie? Use vocabulary from your characterization web to compose a good sentence. (EX. The author used characterization in the movie "Frozen by....) Answer on the characterization web.
_____Step 13: Watch the Presentation of Flat and Round Characters. Use vocabulary from your characterization web to compose a good sentence about flat and round characters. Write a good sentence to add to your characterization web.
_____Step 14: Please read download the Keynote entitled, "The King of Mazy May". Answer the questions right on the keynote page for discussion.
_____Step 15: Read "The King of Mazy May" pg. 52. You may follow along with audio listed above.
_____Step 16: Please download the Read and Stop to work on with a partner, when their name is on the board . Be prepared to discuss your answers in class.
_____Step 17: Please write a Persuasive Essay answering this question: Does wealth bring out the best or worst in people? Complete an outline and a draft in Pages for the essay.
_____Step 18: Read "The Circuit", pg. 66. You may listen to the audio and follow along by clicking above.
_____Step 19: Download the Read and Stop for "The Circuit". You may work with a partner on this activity.
