Husky Mechanic Tool Set Review (1)

Husky has been a stapleat The Home Depot since I can remember. They are known for a good value and known for their hand tools. Recently Husky has stepped up their game in regards to quality. So let’s jump in and check out theHusky Mechanic Tool Set Review and see what we think.

Husky Mechanic Tool Set Review Overview

Looking around you can pretty much find a great starter socket set. I am not an everyday mechanic so I am taking more of a homeowner approach or someone who needs a good set but doesn’t use the tools for their daily work.

In the past, I have always gone with Craftsman. I always thought they had a decent socket set and it was a pretty good value. As we know Sears is going down the tubes and they sold Craftsman to Dewalt. So without having much information, I am pretty much going away from Craftsman for the time being. So I have been looking at the Husky line since their quality has increased, but they still offer a good value.

The 60 piece Husky set comes in a hard plastic case. The latches look like metal, but they are actually plastic also. Not a huge deal if you’re going to take them out and use them in your toolbox. However, if you are going to be using the case long term, you might have some issues with wear and tear on the latches over time.

Opening up the case, you can easily see, identify and access any of the 60 pieces in the kit. The set includes 42 sockets, 11 screwdriving bits, and 2 ratchets.

The set includes one 3/8″ drive 100-position ratchet, one 3/8″ drive 100-position gimbal palm ratchet, 1 standard length 1/4″ drive knurl grip universal sockets, 8 deep 1/4″ drive knurl grip universal sockets, 12 standard length 3/8″ drive knurl grip universal sockets, 12 deep 3/8″ drive knurl grip universal sockets and 16 other accessory and drive tools.

Here is one feature that surprised me with the Husky set, the ratchet. Husky uses a 10 position socket which means it’s great for tighter areas.

Looking at the sockets, they did a nice job and the machining process seems like what you get from the more expensive sockets on the market.

Each socket features a knurl ring and tapper design which makes it easier to grip and spin using only your fingertips.

The sockets feature a laser-etched size marking. This makes the size stand out and easy to identify.

I think the ratchet handle could be a little beefier, but it is still pretty comfortable and this is really only designed for 3/8″ and 1/4″ sockets. So my guess is you won’t be prying or having to apply a ton of pressure where you would need the beefier handle.

The head of the ratchet has a low profile, which again is great for tight spaces.

Husky Mechanic Tool Set Review Value

The 60 piece Husky mechanic set retails for about $60 at The Home Depot. For the variety of sockets and the quality of the ratchet, it’s a pretty good value. You can find sets for less money, but usually, that means less quality.

Husky Mechanic Tool Set Review Final Thoughts

Husky has been making hand tools for a long time. Lately, they have increased the quality but haven’t increased the prices. Anyone looking for a great starter kit that won’t break the bank should take a look at the Husky. With a price tag of $60 and a lifetime warranty, it’s hard to go wrong.
