Heart of the Ocean Diamond

We also know this diamond as Le Cœur de la Mer. The diamond is, in fact, a fictional diamond. There never was a real version of this remarkable blue diamond in existence. However, a lot of details from this diamond necklace is similar to those from the Hope Diamond. The Hope Diamond was owned by Louis XIV. He would have worn it as a royal necklace. Whereas the Heart of the Ocean Diamond supposedly belonged to Louis XVI that he wore as a crown. A piece of movie history

The diamond necklace that is seen in the Titanic is not a real diamond. It is cubic zirconia set in white gold. Making this piece of movie history cost around $10.000. As you can imagine, that is not even close to the value of a ‘real’ Heart of the Ocean. Nowadays, Twentieth Century Fox keeps the original piece that was used in the movie in their archives. Even though it is not a real diamond, it comes with a certain price tag because of the sentimental value. Reproductions of the Heart of the Ocean

The popularity of the Titanic of course asked for reproductions of this blue diamond necklace. There are two impressive examples that we’d like to take a closer look at. The first one was donated to Sotheby’s charity auction. It was a 171-carat sapphire shaped like a heart and flanked by 103 diamonds set in a platinum necklace. An unknown collector bought it for $2.2 million. Celine Dion did get the honor of wearing this beautiful piece at the 1998 Academy Awards ceremony (Oscars). The other one comes from the famous jeweler Harry Winston. Winston owned the Hope Diamond, Briolette of India, and many other famous diamonds. This jeweler made his own take on the Heart of the Ocean Diamond using a 15-carat real blue diamond. This piece is worth 10 times as much as the previous example. It is valued at $20 million. Gloria Stuart wore it at the 1998 Academy Awards. Stuart was the actress playing the elder version of Rose. We do have to admit a blue diamond necklace isn’t easy to come by, hence the price. But sapphire jewelry has a similar feel and looks at least as mysterious!
