Custom Skins Are They Bannable?

League of Legends has had a good time releasing quality skins these past few years. The Spirit Blossom, PROJECT, and even the Space Groove skin lines are some of the many skin lines that feature cool-looking skins that prompt any player to pull out their wallet and give their money straight to Riot Games.

However, it’s not always that your wallet has something inside, so some players might be inclined to use custom skins. The question now would be, is it okay for you to use them?

Can You Get Banned for Using Custom Skins in League of Legends? (1)

Custom skins are basically champion skins that are not officially created or supported by Riot Games. Usually, to use these custom skins, you have to use third-party software like LCS-Manager and Fantome. They can modify the champion textures and other aspects of the user interface like the HUD and even the map.

However, most of these modifications are only local to your machine. Other players will not be able to see your custom skins. Additionally, you need to open the third-party software every time you launch League of Legends, which may affect your PC’s performance. Since these are third-party software, Riot Games will also not support these programs and the errors that may come up while using them.

Are They Bannable?

The short answer is no: using custom skins is not bannable, but Riot Games does look into these use cases. Specifically, using custom skins to obtain official skins from Riot Games for free is definitely grounds for a ban. Additionally, if the player gains a measurable advantage in the game, they may also be banned. In Riot Games’ Terms of Services, they note that as long as these custom skins are used for non-commercial purposes, it’s perfectly fine to use them.

Using custom skins is generally a gray area in terms of banning. As one of Riot’s employees said, they’re on the “use at your own risk” side of things. However, some servers do ban players who are caught to have used custom skins. Notable regions which ban the use of custom skins are the Korean, Turkey, and Russian servers.

Overall, using them is not forbidden, but you’re trekking unsafe territory where it is possible for you to get banned and even get your PC broken by unsupported content. As long as you understand the risks of using custom skins, you are free to use them.
