So if you’ve been following me for any length of time, you know I love to bake. I’m always experimenting with new homestead recipes. Luckily, I have a big family who loves to eat - especially home-baked bread.

Confession time. Although I’ve been baking homemade bread and dinner rolls for many, many years, I haven’t had much success with sourdough bread recipes.

I made a few feeble attempts to create a sourdough starter. Yet they always turned into a smelly hot mess.

Then my aunt gave me a few tips. Actually, I think she got them from my cousin. And you know what? They worked.

As it turns out, I’m not the only one who struggled to get the hang of making a good sourdough loaf.

But as I recently learned, with some patience (hah) plus the right recipes and techniques, anyone can create sourdough bread.

Sourdough Bread FAQs

Before I get into my big list of unique sourdough bread recipes, I want to address some frequently asked questions about baking sourdough bread to help you create your delicious sourdough recipes.

What do I need to make sourdough bread?

The most important ingredients you’ll need for sourdough bread are flour, water, salt, and starter (sourdough culture).

You’ll also need a bowl or container to mix the ingredients together in and a baking dish of some kind. I like a cast-iron dutch oven with a lid.

You’ll need this for proofing and baking.

Lastly, you may want to use olive oil or butter to grease your working space.

And by the way, have you had a chance to check out Lehman's Hardware Store ? This is one of our favorite sites for quality, Amish-made homestead kitchen supplies, tools and more at great prices!

How to Store Sourdough Bread

Once cooled, store your homemade sourdough bread by wrapping it tightly with plastic wrap or placing it in an airtight container.

Store it at room temperature for up to two days.

Can you freeze sourdough bread?

Yes. Wrap the sourdough bread with two layers of plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Then put it in a freezer-safe bag or container. Make sure it is airtight so it doesn’t dry out.

Thaw the bread overnight at room temperature. Or reheat sourdough bread for about 15 minutes in a warm oven (about 275 F.)

This is the same way I reheat my homemade dinner rolls and whole grain artisan bread.

How much time does it take to make sourdough bread?

This is a tough question because it depends on a bunch of things, including your sourdough starter.

Honestly, the timing varies. Making sourdough bread takes about 7-10 days total, depending on several factors which impact the fermentation of your sourdough starter.

Firstly, the temperature - the warmer the area where the starter is, well, starting, the faster the fermentation process.

Secondly, the type of water used. Looking back, I think this was my problem.

My first adventure with sourdough starter happened when I lived in a small town in Southern Ontario. So I was using chlorinated tap water, which can slow down the fermentation process.

So once your sourdough starter has been established though, the actual breadmaking goes a lot quicker.

I’d say the active process of mixing, kneading, and forming your loaf only takes about an hour. That said, the timing varies depending on the recipe.

Then once in the oven, a typical sourdough loaf will bake for 45 minutes to an hour.

Do I need special equipment?

Not necessarily.

In addition to the bowl or Dutch oven mentioned above, you might like to add parchment paper or silicone mats for lining your loaf pans or dutch oven (if you’re going to bake your sourdough in that

Of course, there are all sorts of additional homestead kitchen items out there (like bannetons - proofing baskets) to help you get started baking sourdough. Honestly? I’ve been baking bread for over 30 years now. And I’ve never used one.

And before I forget, don't throw out that sourdough discard. You can always dehydrate your sourdough starter. It lasts for months this way. Then you'll just add water to rehydrate it and bake.

Save it to sourdough banana muffins for breakfast.

Try sourdough starter crackers for a snack.

Then make sourdough discard tortillas for lunch.

And serve sourdough discard biscuits alongside soup for dinner!
